THE JUMPERS /
SKAKAČI
HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN, Tomislav Torjanac (illustrator)
Mozaik knjiga (HR) 2012.
EN “The Jumpers
picture book confirms ethics and aesthetics in Torjanac’s oeuvre, where
his literary knowledge is clearly conveyed in his visual expression
which is as wisely and diligently shaped as the symbolic literary
originals he has ‘adapted’.”
– Igor Jurilj, Croatian Radio 2
“An interesting story becomes truly vivid and
rich because of wonderful illustrations by Tomislav Torjanac. His
characters – and they do become something of his own and special in the
contest of the story – come out of every page as almost living beings
within the book covers.”

‘adaptirao’.”
– Igor Jurilj, Drugi program Hrvatskog radija
“Zanimljiva priča postaje zaista živopisna i
bogata zbog prekrasnih ilustracija Tomislava Torjanca. Njegovi likovi – a
zaista postaju nešto njegovo i posebno unutar konteksta same priče –
knjige.”

“Once
upon a time the Flea, the Grasshopper and the Frog wanted to see which
one could jump the highest; so they invited the whole world, and even a
few others, to see the grand sight”. Thus begins The Jumpers – a picture book based on the most ludicrous, most atypical and my most favourite of all Andersen’s tales. |

The
illustrations are abound with surreal, nonsensical elements, but
essentially are an allegory of the French Revolution, as well as my
homage to caricaturists and satirists of that period (of course, that
particular foreknowledge isn’t required in order to understand the
illustrations and the story). The book also contains musical notation of
Händel's Sarabande adapted for violin and viola, performed by one of the characters. |

velikim karikaturistima i satiričarima onoga vremena (naravno, svo to

The
illustrations were painted in oils on 70x35 cm wood panels and combined
with digital medium. The book was also designed and hand-lettered by
me. |

Ilustracije
sam naslikao uljenim bojama na drvenim podlogama 70x35 cm, u
kombinaciji s digitalnom tehnikom. Knjigu sam i grafički oblikovao te
vlastoručno upisao tekst. |
